TO YOUR HEALTH! 🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶
Knitting is a tool that everyone can use to manage daily stress. On a more serious level Knitting has been used to manage mental health and medical conditions. The rhythm of the needles has been known to have a positive influence on individuals suffering from low mood, depression, anxiety, ptsd, addiction and chronic pain.
Betty Corkhill, in her piece on Knitting For Health and Wellness suggests we consider the following reasons why knitting can help with anxiety.
- Bilateral, coordinated and precise hand movements, are hard work for the brain, and crossing over midline requires even more brain work. As a result we are less able to pay attention to other issues and concerns we may be experiencing. In other words, knitting distracts the brain.
- Knitting is portable and can go almost anywhere with you. Just tuck it in a small bag and it’s always nearby for when symptoms of anxiety or panic arise.
- Even hormone levels are affected by the hand arts. More serotonin is released with repetitive movement. This improves mood and sense of calmness. Knitting can also reduce blood levels of cortisol, which is the stress hormone.
Do YOU knit for your health? Perhaps not but the good news is that even if you're just knitting for fun, you too are receiving the benefits!
